Records were broken on Saturday 12th October 2019 for our Grounds/Green team AND for our involvement with Duke of Edinburgh volunteers!
A Grounds/Green team a total of seven "mature-ish!" folk were joined by 9 young D of E volunteers: 16 out in total, tackling the boundary hawthorns, intertwined with themselves and with ivy, along the Gallows Reach boundary with Longbridge Road. We were too spread out to get any more than a few of us in one photo! I'm sure we hit a record for D of E volunteers, 9 out with Grounds/Green team and one more with Plant maintenance, who expertly put the Grounds/Green team's new trolley together. This was bought with TSB Community Fund monies; its reviews said "instructions awful" but Tom did it in no time (I dont think Steve gave him the so-called instructions!). Also, Harry, who began as a D of E volunteer years ago came back from Loughborough University for the weekend to carry on his work creating the portaloo trailer.
It was great to see so many of our new young volunteers turning out to sort the vegetation and arisings from the hedge management being carried out by Roger along the back of the towpath at Gallows Reach and creating more timber stack “bug hotels” along this section. The trailer on loan from Allfit was put to good use moving recycled timber and branches for the environmental mound along the nature trail. We also took the opportunity to replant more daffodils and native bluebells along the new landscaped environmental mound.
Huge thanks to all: Roger, Aileen, Margaret, Wendy, Patsy, Steve B, Harry and our youngsters: Liv, Ted, Alex, Daniel, Tom L, Luke, Billy, Rob, Ollie and Tom W - great work done, and more of the same this Saturday!
